People search for this more than you’d think, so here is the short answer first: etapa is the Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan word for a stage — one leg of a longer journey. It is pronounced eh-TAH-pah, with the weight on the middle. The French version is étape, which is where the Tour de France gets it.
If you have ever watched a grand tour, you have seen the word in action. The Vuelta a España is ridden in etapas. The Tour de France is ridden in étapes. Each day is a stage with its own start line, its own finish, its own character — a flat sprint day, a mountain day, a time trial. Nobody rides the whole three weeks in one go. They ride today’s stage, recover, and ride tomorrow’s.
Why we named a cycling app after a stage
Most people who want to get into cycling stall on the same thing: the whole route looks enormous. “I’d like to do a 100 km sportive one day” sits next to “I haven’t been on a bike since school” and the gap between them is so wide that the sensible-seeming move is to not start. That gap is the problem Etapa is built around, and the name is the philosophy in one word.
You don’t need to see the whole route. You need to see today’s stage. A first ride you can picture finishing. Then another one. The 100 km day, if you still want it, is a long way down the road and you will get there the same way the professionals do: one etapa at a time, with rest in between.
That is the whole idea. It is why the app builds plans in phases rather than dumping a 24-week wall of sessions on you, why the coach checks in every week to see how the last stage went, and why the first thing it asks is what you can actually manage this week, not what you wish you could.
What an etapa looks like when you’re new
A stage doesn’t have to be long or impressive. For a beginner it usually looks like one of these:
- The first 20 minutes. Around the block, to the end of the cycle path and back, no target other than coming home glad you went.
- The first ride with a destination. A café, a friend’s house, the next village. Rides with a point are easier to start than rides with a distance.
- The first ride you were slightly nervous about. A busier road, a longer hill, a group. The nerves are the sign it was a real stage.
- The first 25 km, then 50 km. Round numbers are fine as stages once they are the next thing, not the first thing.
Each one is a finish line. You cross it, you recover, and the next one is a little further. If you want to know how far that first stage should be, we wrote about exactly that in how far a beginner should ride. The honest answer is: something achievable.
How to say it (and how not to)
eh-TAH-pah. Three syllables, stress in the middle. It is not “ee-TAP-ah” and it is not the French “ay-TAP”, although if you say étape to a French cyclist they will know exactly what you mean. In Spain, Portugal and much of Latin America the word is everyday: a stage of a project, a leg of a road trip, a phase of life. Cycling borrowed it because a race is a journey broken into days.
Things Etapa is not
Because the word is common, a few searches for “etapa” land somewhere else entirely. To save you a click:
- Not L’Étape du Tour. That is a mass-participation ride on a real Tour de France stage route, run by the Tour’s organisers. Brilliant event, same root word, nothing to do with us.
- Not a gym, a gym chain or a membership scheme. Etapa is a mobile app. There is no building.
- Not a piece of hardware. No bike computer, no bottle, no wearable. Your phone, your bike, and the rides you already have time for.
What Etapa the app actually does
Etapa is a cycling app for people who are new, coming back after a long gap, or riding but not sure what to do next. You tell it your goal — a first sportive, a bikepacking weekend, or just “ride more without falling off the habit” — and the days you can ride, and it builds a plan around that. You get a coach you can message when a session made no sense, help finding a route or an event, a plain-English bike fit from a couple of photos, and a hand when something rattles mid-ride. It is on iOS and Android, free to download, with a subscription for the full plan.
Or, in one word: it is the thing that turns the enormous route into today’s stage.
